Figurine Making in the Classroom

The Day Drawing Time Got an Upgrade

At Himawari Preschool in Fukuoka, teacher Yui Nakamura tried something new with her class of 5-year-olds. Instead of regular drawing time, she announced: "Today, we're going to turn your drawings into 3D figurines."

"The moment I told them their pictures would become figurines, the energy in the room completely changed," Yui recalls. "Every single child sat up straighter and grabbed their crayons with this incredible focus."

How the Event Worked

Theme: "My Favorite Thing"

Yui kept the theme open: draw your favorite thing. Animals, foods, characters, family members -- anything goes.

"I wanted the broadest possible theme so every child's individuality could shine through. And it worked. Twenty kids produced twenty completely unique drawings."

A Remarkable Shift in Focus

The children's approach to drawing was noticeably different from usual.

"Kids who normally finish a drawing in five minutes spent over thirty minutes on theirs. One boy told me, 'I'm being extra careful because it's going to be a figurine!' Several children asked if they could start over to make their pictures even better."

The teaching staff was surprised by the level of engagement. Drawing time had never been this intense.

The Big Reveal

Yui uploaded all twenty drawings to figmee and scheduled a reveal for the next day. She projected each figurine on the classroom's big screen, one at a time.

"When each child saw their figurine appear, they'd shriek with excitement. And when their classmates' figurines came up, everyone was cheering, 'So cute!' and 'That's amazing!' The biggest hit was Takuma's dinosaur figurine. The whole class crowded around the screen wanting a closer look."

Educational Benefits the Teacher Observed

Building Self-Confidence

"Some children in the class aren't confident about their drawing skills. But when they saw their own art transformed into a figurine, their faces just lit up. They realized that their drawing didn't need to be 'perfect' to become something wonderful."

Appreciating Each Other's Differences

"Children started noticing and complimenting things about each other's art they'd never mentioned before. 'I love how you used that color!' or 'Your drawing is so funny!' They were discovering each other's creative strengths."

Increased Motivation to Create

"After the event, more children chose drawing during free play time. Several asked me, 'When can we make figurines again?' It gave them a new reason to pick up crayons and create."

Parents Loved It Too

When Yui shared the figurine images with parents, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

"Parents told me their children came home talking excitedly about 'their figurine.' Some said they wanted to try figmee at home. A few families have already started creating their own figurine collections."

Yui's Advice for Educators

"In early childhood education, we always talk about validating children's self-expression. figmee takes that validation to a new level. Instead of just telling a child 'great job,' you can show them their artwork transformed into something tangible and impressive. Seeing their drawings become figurines helps children understand that their creative expression has real value. I'm already planning our next figurine day."
